The pressures on traditional foods are mounting, as are the pressures on liability of farmers, ranchers, Osage Nation food systems, and food businesses. The need to take immediate action to establish basic parameters for food sovereignty and seed protection in the law is clear. The newly emerging food safety federal laws will only continue to create uncertainty and potentially, legal liability for Osage Nation food producers and businesses. The need for tribal governments to express their sovereignty through food and agricultural law is great. The purpose of this Act is to provide a framework that establishes the important work of protecting Osage food systems; to safeguard public health and provide to consumers food that is safe, unadulterated, and honestly presented; to establish the formal standards for food establishments licensed by the Osage Nation; to ensure that Osage Nation licensed food establishments and others are aware of the Osage Nation’s food code standards; and to provide legal standards for use as training, informational, legal and enforcement, and other purposes relating to the activities of food establishments.
